The 2020 Western Region Academy of Sport Golf Squad

The Western Region Academy of Sport (WRAS) has a proud history of producing stellar junior athletes, and the golf program is no exception.

Many athletes aim to compete at State or National championships, and WRAS prides itself on being able to provide assistance to all aspiring western region athletes. For golfers, WRAS can offer an opportunity to develop all aspects of an individual’s game by working closely with Jack Newton Junior Golf and local golfing coaches.

WRAS Executive Officer, Candice Boggs said the program is set up to assist all athletes’ achieve their goals.

“We aim to work hand in hand with Jack Newton Junior Golf, our coach, Bruce McLean and the athletes to provide the assets they require for success.”

“For the golfers our offerings are based on maximising their technical, emotional, mental and physical ability. Usually throughout the program we offer sessions with sports psychologists, strength and conditioning opportunities to coincide with what the athletes have said they enjoyed to help them succeed.”

Bruce McLean continuing Head Coach for the WRAS Golf Program, described the squad as an amazing opportunity for any aspiring golfer in the region.

“The pathway that WRAS presents is instrumental in helping to up-skill our regional athletes in terms of the insight, education and information they can provide about the degree of commitment needed to make it in any professional sport,”

“You can see it across all their programs including golf, as so many athletes have been identified to be able to take the next step. Across the past decade WRAS has helped nurture many high quality athletes that have excelled in PGA Apprenticeships, amateur or even professional careers.”

Of the current squad members, Ella Murray and Cameron Jackson both earnt spots in the 2019 NSW Golf Junior Development Squad. Notable graduates of the program include James Grierson who made the NSW team in 2018, who turned professional a year later and now features on the Asian tour. While Dylan Thompson (WRAS 2015) completed his PGA Apprenticeship between 2016 and 2019 winning 4 trainee tournaments along that stretch.

Other graduates who have completed PGA Apprenticeships include Matt Jones and Min Chien, whilst 2015 WRAS graduate Zac Kelly is set to finish his PGA Apprenticeship later next year.
