The WRAS program provides high performance education and training opportunities to up-skill drivers and assist them in progressing to gain a higher level licence within the sport of harness racing.

Stage 1 Program – target participants (11-15 years) who have an interest in harness racing. The program consists of 3 educations sessions covering a wide variety of topics.

Stage 2 Program – target participants (16-25 years) who are looking to gain their C or B grade license. The program will be delivered over one weekend as a live-in camp based at Charles Sturt University, Bathurst.

These program are the first of their kind in the western region and are supported and endorsed by Harness Racing NSW.

The 2019 harness racing education program will run from February to April.

Thanks to the support from Harness Racing NSW this program is free for all participants.

To be eligible for selection in the stage 1 program drivers must:

  • be aged between 11-17 years
  • be living or attending school in the WRAS catchment area (drivers outside the WRAS region are welcome to apply if there is no academy program in their region)
  • submit a nomination form before the closing date and attend one of the scheduled trial days

To be eligible for selection in the stage 2 program drivers must:

  • be aged between 16-25 years
  • be pursuing their C and/or B grade license
  • participants from across the state of NSW are eligible to apply

Examples of education topics covered between the two programs include:

  • nutrition
  • spots psychology and goal setting
  • strength and conditioning
  • media training
  • animal welfare
  • financial fitness
  • rules and regulations
  • practical driving
  • drugs and alcohol in sport
