ELIZA and Bernadette Barden have won bronze and gained national selection at the Ivor Burge National Basketball Championships on the weekend.
The dynamic Orange duo represented NSW Country at the championships, beating South Australia in the bronze medal match.
The 17-year-old twins, who attend The Canobolas Rural Technology High School, have been regulars in the national side and head coach Carmen Skidmore says they both shone in the tournament.
“Eliza was the top scorer in just about every match she played in and Bernie was never far behind her,” Skidmore said.

This is the 6th year of the Trans-Tasman exchange, with the Bay of Plenty Netballers visiting our region last year. The tour will be a great opportunity for the squad to test their skills against some of the best netball players from NZ.
Just a note for the families and friends of the Netball girls and Tour squad – the girls have arrived safely and are enjoying training and their meet and greet activities with our hosts – It’s so great to see our Bay of Plenty guests from last year!
We’ll be adding photos to the WRAS Website Photo Gallery during the tour (click on the Photo Tabs at the top!). You can also become a fan of WRAS on facebook or follow WRAS on twitter to receive updates on how the girls are doing and what we’ve been up to.
WRAS commences program for talented western region officials
Posted by Flick in Latest News on September 25th, 2009
The Western Region Academy of Sport is proud to announce the inclusion of officiating as a new program for 2009/2010.
Officials are the forgotten backbone of the sporting world. Officials often work very hard at their sport but are only drawn to our attention when a mistake is made. Without referees and officials sport as we know it would cease to exist. This is why WRAS has taken the initiative and introduced a program to train and nurture young and talented officials from the western region.
Officials were selected on the basis of recommendations from State Sporting Organisations. The officials from around the western region that were selected for the program are:
Aminta Barby (netball), Emily Brady (hockey), Andrew Brown (hockey), Ben Castlehouse (basketball), Laura Dickenson (hockey), Tye Evans (basketball), Shaun Hildebrandt ( football ), Chloe Potts (hockey), Danielle van Kemenade (netball) and Saan Williamson (netball).
Coordinator of the officiating program is National Basketball Association referee Peter Wright. Peter regularly officiates in the NBL and also the WNBL. Peter recently received the 2009 award for Waratah Australian Basketball League Referee of the year, the award came on the back of his performance in the National Basketball Association grand final
Nathan Pearce and Tony Wilds from Bathurst have been appointed as the two satellite coaches. Nathan has been officiating ruby union since 1998, and has refereed 70 first grade matches, including super 14 games, NSW 1st grade games, and two international test matches. Nathan is up for selection for the 2011 Rugby World Cup in New Zealand.
Tony is currently president of the Bathurst Football Referees Association, and has refereed football from local level up to State League Division One. Tony is also a State Graded Touch Football referee and an active member of the Sydney Cricket Association 1st grade panel.

The Academy is pleased to welcome new head coaches Ross Hunter (Grenfell) for Lawn Bowls, and Golf (Town) for Golf to the WRAS team. Both local coaches have extensive experience in their respective sports and will be invaluable to their WRAS program and athletes.

Anna Coughlan (Bathurst) will be in charge of the High Performance and Lone Star programs, local NBL referee Peter Wright (Bathurst) will head up the officiating program and Karen Pellow (Dubbo) will oversee the triathlon program.
WRAS Sports Development Manager Felicity James said “the Academy is very excited with the calibre of this year’s coaching staff in charge of the WRAS sports programs. These local coaches are volunteers and give up their own free time to share their wealth of knowledge with the regions talented athletes. We greatly appreciate their support and look forward to working with them all.”
